Kuala Lumpur, 27 August 2026 \u2014 The Centre for Unmanned Technologies (CUTe), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), participated in a strategic roundtable on \u201cOn-Campus Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Mobility: Synergizing Academic R&D, Safety Frameworks, and Industry Talent\u201d at GATE 2026, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CUTe’s participation was by invitation from SAE International Malaysia, in collaboration with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). The Centre was represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdullah and Dr. Ahmad Imran Ibrahim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roundtable brought together representatives from key government agencies and Malaysian higher education institutions, including IIUM, to explore opportunities for a coordinated national approach towards research, development and talent building in autonomous vehicle technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to establish a collaborative academic consortium focusing on autonomous vehicle mobility. The initiative is expected to operate within the relevant focus cluster of the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), with strategic involvement and oversight from SAE International Malaysia, MARii and MIROS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed consortium brings together a growing network of universities and institutions, including Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah (PSAS), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Taylor’s University and other potential academic partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussions also highlighted the importance of identifying and addressing the immediate needs of consortium members, particularly in areas related to research collaboration, safety protocols, infrastructure, resource sharing and talent development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next meeting and workshop are expected to be hosted at UMPSA, where participating members will further discuss the consortium’s direction, priorities and collaborative initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CUTe welcomes this important opportunity to contribute to a national ecosystem for autonomous and unmanned mobility. Through its expertise in unmanned technologies, artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomous systems, the Centre looks forward to supporting collaborative research and innovation efforts that can advance Malaysia’s capabilities in future mobility technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
